How Green Is It?

In the Green RIG we try to tread lightly on the environment!

Download our How Green Is It? info sheet (PDF 7.0, 0.791MB). We aim to live up to our name and:

  • Run the RIG on biofuel. With biodeisel not readily available, this is not a reality for the RIG just yet - but we’re working on it.
  • Offset the RIG’s carbon emissions. The Green RIG is Climate Conscious™. All the carbon it produces as it drives around the region is offset through the planting of native trees using the Climate Conscious™ system.
  • Be energy efficient. The RIG is kitted out with energy-efficient LED lighting and appliances. We monitor and manage our on-board power use and run equipment as efficiently as possible.
  • Run partly on green power. Solar energy from 8 roof-top solar panels provide 25-50% of the RIG’s power needs.
  • Use passive cooling. You’ll find no air-conditioning on the RIG. Instead we capture cooling breezes and are well insulated against heat gain/loss.
  • Go for daily greening. Our daily challenge in running the RIG is to seek out and use greener consumable products.

In designing the Green RIG we tried hard to:

  • Make careful material choices.  We aimed for products made with less environmental impact, materials with a recycled content, or quality materials with a lifespan to match that of the RIG.
  • Ensure construction efficiencies. As well as employing the key principles of sustainable design, we built the RIG locally in Palmerston North to minimise the energy used to transport materials or people during construction.
  • Make effective use of technology. To reduce the impact of support vehicle/staff travel, video conferencing technology, remote connections for computer and technology servicing, and automated security monitoring are used.
